Various procedures which serve to establish the elastic moduli E of coats are compared with each other and assessed in this article. The knowledge of the elastic moduli of thermally sprayed coats is of particular interest in relation to the existing stress condition and thus to the coat adhesion too. The common method of determining elastic moduli of sprayed coats until now, the instrumented indentation test according to DIN EN ISO 14577 [1], is compared with other methods such as the tensile test, the bending test and the ultrasonic test. The investigations are conducted on arc-sprayed freely formed bodies with the aluminium-steel and steel-steel wire combinations. Austenitic, high-alloyed cast iron serves as the reference. Not only are correlations between the results investigated but the various procedures are also assessed.
