The history of thermal spraying:from Max Ulrich Schoop to today's era
Author: Dr.-Ing. SFI MBA Sven Hartmann
The article encompasses the history of the five thermal spraying technology processes which are most important in today's era: flame, arc, plasma, HVOF and cold gas spraying. Process developments
portrayed within the manuscript show clearly how far the development of spraying technology had already
advanced in the first two decades of the 20th century: While the fundamental physical and gas flow knowledge required for the development of plasma and HVOF spraying was not yet available, the development of powder and wire flame spraying, arc spraying and cold gas spraying had already been completed and the first installations were yet available.
