New types of water-based hydraulic fluids require the adjustment of coating systems. The iron-based TiC-reinforced coating systems developed within the framework of this study are outstandingly suitable as a price-favourable alternative to the conventional coatings used in hydraulic applications such as WCCoCr, Cr3C2-NiCr or hard chromium coatings. They are wear-resistant but require a smaller scope of post-treatment because their hardnesses are lower than those of other carbidic coating systems. The Fe-matrix alloyed with Cr and Ni ensures good corrosion resistances of the Fe-TiC coatings for utilisation in a maritime environment. These aspects make the newly developed Fe-TiC coatings very interesting for the coating of piston rods in hydraulic applications with new types of water-based hydraulic fluids.
