The objectives of the work presented here were to develop easy to handle carbide suspensions which are adjusted to industrial-scale hardware and to produce high-quality thick (up to 150 μm) and thinner (approx. 20 μm) carbide coatings in an economically viable process by means of the thermal spraying of suspensions. Consideration was given to the entire technological chain from the selection of suitable WC and Co raw materials, via the development of aqueous suspensions right up to the preparation and characterisation of coatings. The potential of suspension spraying with aqueous WC-12%Co suspensions was portrayed during the coating of various component demonstrators.
