Thermal spraying - Who invented it?
Author: Dipl.-Ing. Christoph Albert
In comparison with welding technology, thermal spraying is a relatively young
process. In 2009, it is just 100 years ago that people first dealt with the
selective application of coats by spinning on metal powder. It is said that the
idea for this originates from the Swiss Max Ulrich Schoop (born in Frauenfeld in
1870, died in Zürich in 1956). The engineer
had noticed that small metal shots
which were made of lead and struck a
wall produced a coat with good adhesion
due to spattering.
