Thermally sprayed coatings of the Al2O3-TiO2 system have been used in many industrial applications for several decades. However, a better understanding and systematic advancement of the materials of this system would create the potential for their extended use including future coating solutions. The coating properties are influenced by the specific behavior of Al2O3 and TiO2 during the spray process as well as by the specifics of the compound Al2TiO5. In this study, the influence of the composition and the manufacturing process on the homogeneity of the distribution of Al and Ti in commercial powders containing 3% 13% and 40% TiO2 was investigated. The impact of this on the mechanical, tribological, electrical and corrosion properties of APS sprayed coatings are described. Using experimental powders, the influence of the stabilization of Al2TiO5 and the potential of TiO2-rich compositions of the system were evaluated.
