Piston rod coatings in offshore utilisation
Author: Dr.-Ing., MBA Ingo Rühlicke
In offshore utilisation, particularly stringent requirements are set on the corrosion resistance of the piston rods of hydraulic cylinders. This leads to the use of various coat types which exhibit different corrosion damage in the event of incorrect selection. Therefore, the coats must be selected after a comprehensive
assessment of the respective utilisation conditions and, of course, also according to economic aspects. The suitability of the selected coat system must be established on the basis of qualifying tests as well as
utilisation experience. With a Guideline for qualification of wear and corrosion protective surface materials for piston rods and other components [1], not only the manufacturer but also the user are provided with a common basis for the utilisation specification and for the proof of the suitability.
