New concepts for thermally coated piston rings inmodern two-stroke internal combustion engines
Authors: Dipl.-Ing (FH) M. Eng. Marc-Manuel Matz, Dr.-Ing. Marcus Kennedy
The development of HVOF-sprayed liner surface coatings for piston rings is
described in this article. Not only for the automotive market in the USA but also,
in particular, for two-stroke engines, it is necessary to utilise thermally sprayed
liner surface coatings for future engine developments. The objective of achieving
optimum thermophysical properties of the coats, coupled with good tribological
behaviour, was attained at acceptable costs by combining the positive characteristics
of individual well-known material concepts. This pioneering overall system will
soon be ready for series production.
